Big hills and hot sun put us to the absolute test. Kindness suffered serious flats today, two flats back to back. I was trying to fix them in someone’s driveway, but then I noticed that the second flat had split open the tyre.

I was getting devoured by sandflies, and with no place to go I decided to bivvy in a farm paddock, and that’s when I met Melanie. She asked me if I was alright, and when I explained my problem and what I had been up to, she invited me to her place.

I met her husband and her two boys. A wonderful and kind family who opened up their home for us, and Finn, the young one, gave up his bed for me and slept on the couch. Lovely conversation ensued over hot tea and fresh-baked choc chip cookies.

The night at Melanie’s.

Melanie offered to drive me to Kerikeri to get the wheel fixed, while the boys are taking me to an epic, secret swimming hole for a dip in the morning.

Makes me wonder, what kind of kindness is this!
