Day 1: Fremantle to Merredin

FremantleSydney
The start at Fremantle, 6:22 am.

And so it began..

On Day 1, I ended up riding 320km. It’s been a day of getting used to life on the open road. I dealt with flats and nausea the whole day. This too shall pass.

The people of Oz have been amazing. They extended their kindness and hospitality in every possible way. The best thing is the look on their faces when they ask you where you’re headed and you reply “Sydney”.

320km in the bag.

The Shire of York, and the first sunset.

Pretty much everything was closed at Merredin except for a pub, and their $24 butter chicken/pizza was too expensive for me. I walked next door and this lovely couple opened their shop and asked me what I would like to have.

They didn’t have any hot food but were willing to make me instant noodles. After I paid for my noodles, they asked me to join them for dinner.

They didn’t have much but shared what they were having for dinner with me. Curried potato and pumpkin, eggs, toast etc. Amazing meal and great conversations.

Lovely trail angels of IPWR. They make it possible. They make your journey interesting. They make you a better person.
