Day 13: Whananaki

Cape ReingaBluff

The longest footbridge in the Southern Hemisphere, 395m, in Whananaki, New Zealand. The first bridge began construction in 1947 and was built on manuka piles to enable the children on the south side of the estuary to attend school on the north side.

Previously the school teacher rowed a boat across the estuary twice a day to ferry the children across.
