Day 30: The Tongariro Alpine Crossing

Cape ReingaBluff

Standing at the summit of Mt Tongariro, I was filled with gratitude. I looked up to heaven and said, “Thank you.” Extremely humbled and blessed to have witnessed so much beauty in Tongariro National Park in New Zealand. Day 30: 1,158 km.

Mt Ngauruhoe, also known as Mt Doom, as seen from Mt Tongariro. An epic day with breathtaking views along Te Araroa. Dan and I did the Tongariro Alpine Crossing and summited Mt Tongariro in Bedrock Sandals. Mt Ngauruhoe was used as a stand-in for the fictional Mount Doom in The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. Truly a dream come true.

Mt Ngauruhoe, and above the snowline in sandals.

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing has more than lived up to its claim as one of the best single-day hikes in New Zealand, if not the world. Here’s the view of Blue Lake, though it’s not blue coz of the recent snow dump. Considered sacred, it’s also highly acidic.

Blue Lake, and Lake Rotoaira with Lake Taupo behind.
