Day 76: Lake Wanaka and the Motatapu

Cape ReingaBluff

Lone tree along Lake Wanaka on our way to Glendhu Bay along Te Araroa to begin the Motatapu Alpine Track. Views like these make me realize how bloody lucky I am to be here witnessing so much beauty.

Lake Wanaka, and Rose Saddle on the Motatapu track.

View of Mt Motatapu and Mt Hyde from the top of Rose Saddle (1270m) along the Motatapu Alpine Track of Te Araroa. The river was named Mota (River) Tapu (Sacred) by early Māori, who used the Motatapu valley as an access route for food gathering and for the movement of Pounamu (Greenstone). This track is a knee buster when it comes to downhills and really put Dan and me to the real test. It offered stunning views of the entire Motatapu Valley and the surrounding mountains though.

2,607 km at the moment and 388 km to go. Less than a Vol State!

The Motatapu Alpine Track proved more challenging than I had imagined. The downhills were definitely a knee buster. Day 76: 2,671 km, with about 325 km to go!
