My pre-expedition anxiety and worries are at their peak.
How am I ever going to get everything packed in time? Will it all fit in the panniers? Do I have the gear for all kinds of weather? Do I… should I… would I…?
I have done way tougher expeditions. My India to Germany ride was full of uncertainties: visa issues, border crossings, language, and cultural differences. At least for Freedom Seat USA, I don’t have to deal with any of that. But still…
The fun part: I haven’t even seen the tandem yet. It’s being built by Co-Motion, one of the best tandem builders. I will pick it up at their store in Eugene, Oregon on Friday, put all my panniers and gear together, and take it for a test ride.
Getting to the start in Astoria, Oregon would have been a huge challenge if not for Amy Clark, who is coming all the way from Bend to take me and the bike to the start line. Thanks, Amy! You have no idea how much I appreciate you.
Freedom Seat USA is a big deal for me, but saying goodbye to my pregnant wife at the airport was tough. Maggie is amazing for supporting me on this mission, especially with a baby on the way. Going on adventures while single was one thing, but this is a whole new level. My goal is to complete Freedom Seat USA safely and successfully, and be back in time for the ultimate adventure: welcoming our baby into the world.
So much anticipation and excitement as I walked into the Co-Motion office. I picked up “Kindness” and she is a beauty. With only one day to go, the adventure is officially real and there’s no turning back now.
